Benefits of Making Your Bed

Did you know there are actually studies proving that there are positive benefits to making your bed? Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit states that “making your bed every morning is correlated with better productivity, a greater sense of well-being, and stronger skills at sticking with a budget.”

I was a little surprised about the budget part, but when you think about it making your bed every day takes some discipline, as does sticking to a budget. So maybe it isn’t as far fetched as I had first thought. Studies also claim that completing that task first thing in the morning gives you a sense of accomplishment and with starting your day off with that sense of accomplishment you are then more productive and more driven the rest of the day to accomplish more tasks.

I had this discussion with my kids today, trying to explain that I am not just a crazy, anal mom that wants their beds made every day “because I said,” but rather that there are true lifelong benefits that they will gain from making their bed each morning. They were not buying into it! Still, there beds will be made every morning this summer “because I said.”

Research also claims that you are more likely to keep the rest of your space tidy if you keep your bed made because having a tidy bed will make you aware of the untidy parts of the space and naturally want to clean them up. Likewise, a tidy bed just makes the whole space seem more tidy and put together.

I like having a made bed. How about you? I have worked from home for the past 15 years, so I am here to see my made or unmade bed. It makes me crazy to have an unmade bed. I may hit the treadmill before making my bed, but I am not generally one to let it go much further than that. If I have a really crazy day where I hit the ground running in panic mode I will skip it, but it eats at me throughout the day. My husband thinks I am crazy on those panic mode days when things finally slow down and I head into the bedroom and make the bed at five o’clock in the afternoon. There is just too much of a difference in my mood and perception of crawling into a made versus unmade bed. Its worth it to make the bed then, even if I will be messing it up again in just a few hours.

There isn’t much worse than climbing into an unmade bed. We perceive a made bed as a clean bed and an unmade bed as an unclean bed. Think about when you are staying in a hotel. When we were out of town for a livestock show two weekends ago we stayed in a hotel for two nights. I love walking into a fresh, clean hotel room with crisply made beds. However, when we returned to our room in the afternoon of the second day/night our room had not been serviced. The beds were a mess and all I wanted to do was turn around and walk back out. I feel the same way about an unmade bed at home.

I have found that although I love the versatility and immense options that duvet covers offer I do not love the difficulty of making the bed with a duvet cover that has the filler comforter slipping around and making it difficult to get things neat and tidy in an efficient manner. I’ve switched to using a regular comforter for the ease of making the bed. I also love lots of pillows. My husband, not so much. He cusses the number of pillows on our bed. But I do love them and how pretty and polished they make the whole room look.
